Pets on Holiday: What to Know Before You Travel This Summer

As summer holidays approach, many of us are planning some well-earned rest – whether it’s a family staycation in the countryside, a coastal escape, or even a trip abroad. And for pet owners, that raises an important question: what about the dog, cat, or rabbit?

At Highgate Veterinary Clinic, we know how important your pets are to your plans. Whether they’re joining you on the journey or staying behind, here’s what you need to know to make sure they stay safe, happy, and healthy.

Taking Your Pet on Holiday? Plan Ahead

If you’re thinking of bringing your pet along on your summer break, a little preparation goes a long way.

✔ Check Pet-Friendly Accommodation
Not all hotels or rentals accept animals, and even pet-friendly spots may have restrictions. Double-check the rules, and ask about secure gardens, local walking routes, or nearby beaches that allow dogs.

✔ Travel Safety Essentials
For dogs and cats travelling by car, make sure they’re secured in a well-ventilated crate or with a travel harness. Take regular breaks for water and toilet stops, and never leave them in a parked car – even for a few minutes.

✔ Pack Their Holiday Kit
Bring their regular food, water bowls, bedding, favourite toys, lead/harness, and any medications. Familiar smells can really help them settle in unfamiliar surroundings.

✔ Keep Their Microchip and ID Up to Date
A microchip with current contact details is essential in case they get lost in an unfamiliar place. All dogs in the UK must also wear a collar with a tag showing the owner’s name and address.

Planning a Trip Without Your Pet? Here’s What to Consider

Not all pets enjoy travel or change. Some are far happier staying at home or in professional care while you’re away.

✔ Boarding Kennels and Catteries
If you’re booking a kennel or cattery, ensure it is licensed, inspected, and has good reviews. Book well in advance during the summer peak. We’re happy to help with recommendations if needed.

✔ Pet Sitters and Home Boarding
For pets who don’t cope well in unfamiliar environments, a trusted sitter or home boarder may be more suitable. Always meet them beforehand and check references or insurance.

✔ Leave Emergency Details
Leave your sitter or carer with your pet’s routine, vet contact details, and any relevant medical history. If you’re a client of Highgate, they can always call us for support if needed.

Travelling Abroad with Your Pet

Since Brexit, taking pets abroad has become more complex. Pet passports issued in Great Britain are no longer valid for travel to the EU or Northern Ireland.

If you’re travelling internationally, you’ll need:

  • An Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued within 10 days of travel

  • Proof of microchipping and rabies vaccination

  • Tapeworm treatment for dogs (in some countries)

This process can take several weeks, so speak to us as early as possible if you’re considering taking your pet abroad.

Before You Go: Book a Pre-Holiday Health Check

Whether your pet is travelling with you or staying behind, it’s worth having a quick check-up to ensure they’re in good health and up to date on vaccinations, flea/worming, and any repeat prescriptions.

At Highgate Veterinary Clinic, we offer pre-travel health checks and expert advice tailored to your holiday plans.
