Why Do Dogs Do That? Funny Dog Behaviours Explained
Dog owners quickly learn that life with a dog is never boring. One minute they are calmly lying on the sofa, the next they are sprinting around the garden at full speed for absolutely no obvious reason.
As amusing as some dog behaviours seem, there is usually a genuine reason behind them. At Highgate Veterinary Clinic, we are often asked about the strange, funny and sometimes baffling things dogs do every day.
So, if you have ever wondered why your dog follows you everywhere or suddenly races around the house like a lunatic after a bath, you are not alone.
The Famous “Zoomies”
Almost every dog owner has witnessed it. One moment your dog is calm, then suddenly they are charging around the house or garden at top speed with wild excitement.
These bursts of energy are commonly known as “zoomies”. Technically, they are called Frenetic Random Activity Periods, but zoomies is definitely easier to remember.
Dogs often get zoomies:
- After a bath
- Following a walk
- During play
- When they are excited or relieved
It is usually completely normal behaviour and simply a way for dogs to release pent-up energy and excitement.
Why Dogs Tilt Their Heads
Few things make owners smile faster than a dog tilting its head when spoken to.
Dogs do this for a few possible reasons. Sometimes they are trying to better understand sounds or focus on certain words and tones. In other cases, they may simply have learned that humans react positively when they do it.
Either way, it works brilliantly on us every time.
Following You Everywhere
Many dogs behave as though personal space simply does not exist. Whether you are making a cup of tea or heading to the bathroom, they are right behind you.
Dogs are naturally social animals and many form extremely close bonds with their owners. Following you around can simply be a sign of affection and curiosity.
That said, if a dog becomes distressed whenever left alone, it can sometimes point towards separation anxiety. At Highgate Veterinary Clinic, we can help advise owners if they are concerned about anxious behaviour.
Spinning Before Lying Down
This is one of those behaviours dogs have inherited from their wild ancestors.
Before settling down to sleep, wild dogs would circle around to flatten grass, check for danger and make their resting spot comfortable. Modern dogs have kept the instinct, even if the “danger” today is simply a slightly uneven blanket.
Sleeping in Very Strange Positions
Upside down on the sofa. Legs in the air. Twisted like a pretzel.
Dogs often sleep in strange positions simply because they feel safe and relaxed in their environment. Sleeping on their back can also help them cool down, as there is less fur on their stomach.
As odd as it looks, it is usually a very good sign that your dog feels comfortable and secure.
Carrying Socks, Shoes or Random Objects Around
Some dogs love carrying items belonging to their owners. Shoes, socks and even children’s toys often become prized possessions.
This behaviour is usually linked to comfort and scent. Your belongings smell familiar and reassuring to your dog. Certain breeds also have strong retrieving instincts, making them naturally inclined to carry objects around.
The key is making sure the items are safe and not something they could swallow.
Barking at Apparently Nothing
Every dog owner has experienced that moment when their dog suddenly barks at an empty corner of the room, leaving everyone wondering what on earth they can hear.
Dogs have much sharper hearing than humans and can pick up distant noises we would never notice. Sometimes they are reacting to sounds outside, movement nearby, or even another animal that has gone completely unnoticed by us.
Usually, there is an explanation, even if we never discover what it was.
Our Dogs Keep Us Laughing
Part of what makes dogs so special is their personality. Their quirky habits, strange routines and funny little behaviours are often the things owners love most about them.
At Highgate Veterinary Clinic, we know that understanding behaviour is an important part of keeping dogs healthy and happy. While most funny behaviours are completely normal, sudden changes in behaviour can sometimes indicate stress, anxiety or underlying health concerns.
If you are ever unsure about your dog’s behaviour, our friendly team is always happy to help.
Every Dog Has Their Quirks
Whether your dog gets zoomies after every bath or insists on carrying socks around the house, these little habits are all part of what makes them unique.
And honestly, life would probably be far less entertaining without them.
